Jack Gates is a guitarist, composer and teacher.
As a creative musician, Jack Gates has developed a unique guitar style embracing flamenco, samba, jazz, classical, raga and blues music.
Jack Gates grew up in Northern California in the Berkeley area. When he was young his parents introduced him to classical guitar music. After studying some flamenco and folk guitar, at age 16, jazz guitar lessons opened new doors of perception.
Jack had the opportunity to travel to Italy for study, with his friend, sitarist Tim White. This association led Jack to the study of North Indian classical music under Maestro Ali Akbar Khan.
Performing at festivals, nightclubs in San Francisco and the Bay Area with some of the finest musicians from Brazil, Latin America and the U.S., Jack developed his colorful and expressive guitar sound. His ensemble and solo recordings feature original compositions, many with vocalist Sharyl Gates.
Jack Gates has performed with Liza Silva, Jeff Narell, Marcos Silva, Daria, Klezmania, The Blake Street Hawkeyes, Chalo Eduardo, Claudia Gomez, David Motto, Robert Kaufman, Monica Pasqual and David Belove. His discography includes recordings with Silvia Nakkach and Kit Walker, Joanne Shenandoah, Juanita Newland, Quique Cruz, Paul Van Wageningen, Michael Manring and Phil Thompson.
Jack Gates’ original music CDs Boulevard, Earth Messenger and Voyage of the Troubadour on WhiteGates Records have received radio airplay on 500 stations worldwide. The recording Voyage of the Troubadour reached the Top 10 on the ZMR playlist is 2014.
Jack Gates’ latest recording is Bring the Flavors, scheduled for release in 2017, featuring percussionist Steve Robertson, Stan Poplin, acoustic bass, Damien Masterson, harmonica and Michal Palzewicz on cello.
